Join me for a day hike at Oak Mountain State Park this Saturday. We will meet at the North Trailhead at the far side of the park where we will begin and end our hike. Leaving the North Trailhead, we will follow the white trail up and over Shackleford Point (the hardest climb on this hike) for approximately 4 miles at which point we will take a connector trail to the yellow trail. From here, we will follow the yellow trail along the lake back to the North Trailhead. We will stop for lunch at the covered picnic tables shortly after starting down the yellow trail. I would rate this trail as moderate to difficult because of the distance and the steep trail up Shackleford Point. Bring plenty of water as it will be hot, a quick lunch, snacks, hiking stick and good trail shoes or boots. Any of you with well behaved pooches are welcome to bring them along as long as they remain on a leash, per park regulations. Although we will walk steadily to get the distance covered, this will not be a trail running type activity and we will not leave anyone behind because they are a little slower than some others for safety and other obvious reasons. According to my GPS, this trip will be 8 1/2 miles in distance.
